Care Summary
Among the most attractive small loach species: distinctively patterned with golden-yellow body marked by black chain-like links. Less reclusive than kuhli loaches and more sociable in groups. Active swimmers that need plenty of horizontal space. Sensitive to medications, particularly those containing copper or formalin. Conservation status worth noting: wild populations are critically endangered due to habitat loss, so captive-bred specimens (now widely available) should be preferred over any wild-caught individuals.
Tankmates
A peaceful schooling loach, among the more sociable bottom-dwelling species. Must be kept in groups of at least 5, ideally 8+, or they become withdrawn and aggressive. Will eat small snails and tiny shrimp, making them excellent natural pest-snail control but poor tankmates for breeding shrimp colonies. Active and visible during the day, unlike kuhli loaches. Best in planted tanks with caves and hideouts for resting.
